The Powers That Be

My heart has stopped in that moment of fear
With a finger, I swipe at another tear
My breathing is ragged, my throat is so dry
and my love of life has faded and died

Be afraid.
Be very afraid.
Of the powers that be.
See them pointing.
See them pointing.
At you and at me.

Listen to them whispering, whispering your name
Watch them erode you, erode you away
Strike a match to your cigarette; I hope you have time to stay
Bury yourself beneath a tonne of bricks before you have to go away

Be afraid.
Be very afraid.
Of the powers that be.
See them laughing.
See them laughing.
They’re laughing at you and me.

They point at you with their fingers, their fingers
And the after flash seems to linger, to linger
And you hear the scream in suspended animation in your ears
As you crumble into a shadow after someone else’s fears

Be afraid.
Be very afraid.
Of the powers that be.
See them killing.
See them killing.
They’re killing you and me.

Deranged and oh so deluded, but my, what a lovely day
You’d think that they’d have better armour to protect themselves from the words they say
But alas, it’s getting personal.  There’s really nothing at stake
They rally to a catch phrase, but the drummer boy is late

You can see it in their eyes, hear it in their cries
As they beat their chests and shave their heads and listen to the lies
They admit that they’re afraid of nothing, commitment makes them strong
But if you really want to know the truth, they should have stayed home with mom
You can only hide for so long before they’re on your back
And you find that there’s only one way down the long and winding track

Be afraid.
Be very afraid.
Of the powers that be.
Hear them shouting.
Hear them shouting.
It’s deafening me.

When you lay down at night, pray to God that it’s all right
That you’ll live through the night
And not have to run as they kick in your door
You don’t have to listen to the kids screaming any more
