Backwards in slow motion

I keep watching the flickering image
Running backwards in slow motion
Of things that I perceive
They are irrevocably different
In the pale insipid light of cold grey mornings
Where friends you thought were friends
Are smiling enemies in disguise
Suck out your soul and discard the empty husk you leave behind

I keep trying to make some progress while
Running backwards in slow motion
So many times that I regress
Sometimes it isn't even worth knowing
What you'd give me in return, when you have nothing to even give
Yet another empty promise

These smiling enemies in disguise
Suck out your soul and discard the empty husk you leave behind

One foot in front of the other foot in front of the other foot
On and on and on in my life
It doesn't matter how fast I run
I always come back to the starting line
It's a never ending circle
Of hurt, delay,confusion and frustration
To watch yourself on the treadmill
Running backwards in slow motion
